16-year-old

discovery
Maria
Sharapova
won
two
WTA
Tour
titles
during
her
debut
year
-
the
Bell
Challenge
in
Quebec
City
and
the
AIG
Japan
Open
in
Tokyo.
The
youngest
winner
on
the
WTA
Tour
in
2003,
she
completed
her
first
WTA
season
with
a
35-14
record.
She
began
hitting
tennis
balls
at
age
four
and
two
years
later
participated
in
a
tennis
exhibition
in
Moscow
that
featured
Martina
Navratilova.
Moved
to
Florida
at
age
nine
to
join
the
Nick
Bollettieri
Tennis
Academy. |

back
from
5-2
down
in
the
third-set
tiebreak
to
win
five
straight
points
in
a
nail-biting
climax
in
Tokyo,
then
appealed
for
no
more
comparisons
