Conversation: 06.
In a book shop
HE: Good morning, madam. Can I help you?
SHE: I am looking for o book to give to my
grand-daughter.
HE: Certainly, madam. Which sort of book interests
you most?
SHE: I am not sure. I want something that is useful or
contains true stories. I do not want fiction.
HE: Then what about at travel book or an atlas? This
atlas is very good value. There is at great
demand for it. It has maps of every country in the
world — with their ancient and modern names
-— and it's in full colour. It also has special
sections — on climate, the stars, the lands of the
Bible.
SHE: No. I think not. She wants something smaller.
She really wanted to come here with me to
choose the book. But I want it to be a surprise.
You understand?
HE: Of course, madam. Whom did you say it was
for?
SHE: My grand-daughter. She has left school, but has
not yet finished her studies. What else can you
suggest? She likes history, of course, I want her
to have a book which will be useful in her
studies.
HE: Then what about a dictionary? Or else a
language course? There is an excellent one
here.
SHE: Which is it? Ah, yes. l believe Mary wants me to
buy something like this.
HE: Most students of foreign languages use this
particular course. You see it is divided into
thirty-five lessons. Each lesson deals with only
one subject. There are lessons on nouns and
adjectives, participles and plurals, tenses and …
SHE: But no slang, l hope?
HE: Oh no, madam, Now here is another book. I
think it is better printed than the other book. its
purpose is the same, but I don‘t consider it uses
such a good system. I shall be pleased to supply
either of the books. I have a stock of both
courses in several languages. Which book
interests you?
SHE: I should like to examine them both myself. What
is their price?
HE: They both cost the same. There has been no
increase in their price. I can arrange for you to
have them both while you consider their relative
quality.
SHE: No, l should like to look at them here, this
morning. But l think l shall buy the one you
showed me first.
HE: You are very wise, madam, if I may say so.
