Conversation: 07.
An interview
HE: I’m sorry to trouble you. Lady Brown. I’m from
the police.
SHE: Oh yes. Please come in. I don’t think I’ve seen
you before.
HE: No, I’m from London. My name is Jones and I
hold the rank of Inspector. Now, I should like to
talk to you about it certain matter.
As you probably know, there have been a
number of serious burglaries round here in the
past few months. I am helping in the
investigation. l beg you. therefore, to treat this
interview as secret.
SHE: Of course. Inspector. One must do what one can
to help.
HE: Thank you. Well, it appears that in each burglary
the thieves have broken down an outside door
with at heavy instrument such as an iron bar,
hammer or an axe.
SHE: How terrible! They might have killed someone.
HE: No, there’s no question of murder. They always
break in when the family is away from home, but
they do a lot of harm. Now, we’ve found the door
of your old hut in the woods wide open. The hut’s
empty. Can you tell me if you ever kept anything
in it?

SHE: Why, yes. We always kept a saw in the hut, as well as things such
as you’ve described. You see, there`s a lot of undergrowth there
which we clear away from time to time.
HE: Do you know the last time anyone went to the
hut?
SHE: Oh dear! I know it sounds silly but one finds
exact dates hard to remember. Let me see.
About five months ago a servant who was leaving asked me for the
key. We’d allowed him to keep some of his things in the hut.
HE: Did he bring the key straight back when he’d
finished?
SHE: I don’t know. After I gave him the key I took a
basket fruit to a friend. He’d gone when I
returned.
HE: Did he work for you very long?
SHE: No, only for a few weeks. He was very polite, but
his work was poor. He left a lot of debts behind him, and
I even found he owed five pounds to the kitchen-maid.
That proves nothing, of course, but one can only judge a
person by the way he behaves.
HE: Yes, that‘s right. Do you know where he worked
before he came here'?
SHE: No, but my husband, Sir James, will know.
He’s in the garden. I’ll send for him.
