Section A
TEACHER'S NOTE
In this lesson
we find John
talking to his
friend, Bill who
is a salesman in
a department
store. He works
in the men's
wear department
so they are
discussing men's
clothes. In the
vocabulary you
will find the
clothes
mentioned in the
conversation and
in addition
there are the
names of other
garments not
mentioned in the
conversation.
Study these
words and make
sure you know
their meaning
and how to say
them.
When you say
words which end
in "ds" or "ts"
l do not hear
the "d" or "t"
sound at all.
For instance,
when you say
"cards" it
sounds exactly
the same as
"cars". To
pronounce these
words correctly,
you must put
your tongue in
the position for
"d" and "t” that
is, against the
roof of your
mouth, and then
slide it down to
form the "s".
Notice that the
"ds" sound is
quite a hard
sound. Listen to
these words"—
John. Oh!
Something has
frightened them;
they've all
flown away.
Jean. It was
probably that
little dog
barking near the
wire. John.
Shall we go and
look at the fish
pond? I think
it's quite near
here. Jean. Yes.
I'd forgotten
there was a pond
in this park.
John. Here it
is. I see
they‘ve put a
fountain in the
middle since I
was last here.
Jean. Doesn't it
look nice with
the water
splashing gently
into the pond'?
John. Yes, it
does. The fish
are all swimming
towards us; they
probably think
we're going to
feed them. Jean.
I’ll give them
some
breadcrumbs.
Here you are,
you
greedy things. 6
John. Just look
at them rushing
after the bread;
it must be a
great treat for
them. Jean.
What's the time,
John? John. It's
half past four.
Jean. Then I
think it's time
we thought about
going home.
John. Perhaps
you're right. If
we go out of the
exit near the
children’s
playground we
won't have to
walk far to the
bus stop. Jean.
That's a good
idea because my
feet are getting
a bit tired
after all the
walking we've
done this
afternoon. John.
We must come
again soon, it's
been so nice.
