Valentine’s Day on February l4th celebrates sweethearts and causes much more activity. The little one’s in school make valentines for their parents with colored paper and crayons. Inside they print traditional words: Be mine, I love you, Be My Valentine. Older children buy valentines for their friends and teachers and put them in a valentine box in their room at school.
At the end of the day there is usually a little valentine party in the classroom with cookies sent to school by two or three mothers; then the valentines are distributed. Stores sell packages of unfinished valentines for children to make themselves. There are envelopes to put together and red hearts to paste on. These are very popular; they keep children busy and amused when the weather is too cold and snowy for them to play outside. Candy stores and flower stores have red hearts and signs in there windows to remind everyone of the coming holiday.

Cricket
is quite unlike other games
and may be thought of as the
world’s most popular also
most unpopular game.
Cricket, sometimes called
the English national game,
is known to have been played
as early as the l550’s.iAnd
among the many clubs dating
from the 18th Century is the
Marylebone Cricket Club,
which reformed the laws of
the game. This is a club now
in the middle of London and
is the center of world and
British cricket.
Cricket is
unlike other games as one
game or one match, it can
often take 3 days and a team
which seems to be winning
can lose if it begins to
rain. This is one of the
reasons why cricket is
played mainly in the summer.
Cricket is a leisurely game,
not apparently energetic. In
fact, in my experience, the
exciting things happen in
the game at the moment when
you aren’t paying attention.

Education is compulsory and free for every child in the United States. Most children start school by the age of six. They attend eight years of elementary school and four years of high schools (or secondary school). The money for free public school comes from taxes, and each state is responsible for its own educational system. State legislatures set the educational requirements but leave the management of the school in the hands of the local communities. Most states require their children to go to school until a certain age. This age varies from 16 to 18 years according to the laws of the individual states. The Federal government contributes funds to the states for additional schools and school services.
After graduation from high school, a student can start his higher education in a two-year college, a four-year college, a university, or a specialized professional school—either public or private. Most colleges admit students on the basis of their high-school records. The cost of a college education is expensive in private universities, but it is much less in those supported by states and cities.
Many students receive scholarships from the schools, the government, or private foundations and organizations. More than 50 percent of the college students work to help pay their college expenses.
