Speaking, Listening and Understanding introduces new English language speakers to the basics of debate. The initial version of this text was presented at the International Debate Festival held at the Xi’an
International Studies
University in the
People’s Republic of
China in August 2004.
Before writing this book, I noticed that there were no simple debate texts for new English language students. Texts available in the United States seemed too complex or used excessive cultural reference. Too often, these qualities made learning difficult. This text was written with the non-native-English speakers in mind.
I had my first debate in 1965. since that time I have met thousands of people who have found the world of debate opened the doors of knowledge. At the heart of debate is a sharing of ideas and information. Ultimately, this book is about that sharing. I will share information that should help you get started in formal debating. Then once you debate, you will share your ideas on a variety of topics. As you share, you will also learn new concepts, a new vocabulary, and a love for the exchange of ideas.
Different coaches have different theories about debate. As you develop as debater, you will learn these. Like all theories, some you may like and others you may not. Part of the sharing process in debate involves understanding how others see the world.
