the semi finals
West Germany
beat France 2-0
while Argentina
beat Belgium 2-0.
France beat
Belgium 4-2 after
extra time in the
3rd place play off
and Argentina
beat West Germany
3-2 in the
final. Brown
(22 mins) and
Valdano (55 mins)
gave Argentina a
2-0 lead but
Rummenigge (73
mins) and Voller
(81 mins) pulled
it back to 2-2,
only for
Burruchaga to
score for
Argentina after 83
minutes. The man
of the tournament,
Diego Maradona had
a great game.
Maradona
handles the ball -
it then goes over
Shilton's head and
into the net (1-0)
After 51
minutes of the
match with
Argentina, Steve
Hodge tried to
clear a ball to
safety but mishit
it up into the air
- the England
goalkeeper Peter
Shilton went for
the catch and
would have got
there first but
Maradona led with
his arm - he
realised Shilton
would get there
first so kept his
arm up on the jump
and hit the ball
into the net with
it - in one of the
worst decisions at
the World Cup, the
referee, Ali
Bennaceur from
Tunisia, gave the
goal - Maradona
would later say it
had been scored by
the "hand of
god"! It was
Ali Bennaceur's
first and last
World Cup game as
a referee.
After 54
minutes, Maradona
scored again but
this time with one
of the World Cup's
great goals - he
got the ball in
his own half and
ran past England
player after
England player -
inside the England
penalty box
Butcher tried to
take him down as
he got past
Shilton but he
shot to make it
2-0 to Argentina -
John Barnes came
on and after 80
minutes he crossed
from the left wing
to Lineker who
scored with a
header to make it
2-1 - Lineker had
a good chance to
make it 2-2 late
on but could not
convert it.
