WEST NILE Q&A.

Prevention

There are some very simple ways you can prevent mosquito breeding and protect yourself from mosquito bites.

  • Get rid of the small pools of water mosquitoes breed in.
  • Dispose of untreated water in your pool, birdbaths, eaves troughs, and other open vessels
  • Empty and clean bird baths twice weekly
  • Remove rainwater that collects on pool covers
  • Aerate ornamental ponds and stock with fish that eat mosquito larvae.

Wear long-sleeved shirts and pants. Use a mosquito repellant containing DEET on exposed skin, particularly between dusk and dawn when mosquitoes feed most actively. In addition, ensure that windows and doors are sealed and in good repair.

If you or your family members develop symptoms such as high fever, confusion, muscle weakness, and severe headaches, you should see your doctor immediately.

If you are determined to be at high risk and have symptoms of West Nile encephalitis, a blood sample is the only way to confirm infection.
